What a racket – HM Tom can't hear himself think. He shouts up the stairs, wanting to know who's up there. The loud music continues, but nobody responds to his question. So, he raises his voice even more, trying to make himself heard above the ear-splitting noise. With his long legs, he takes the stairs three at a time and has almost reached the top when the music stops abruptly and Maggy comes out of her room. He demands to know why she's not at school. She reminds him that it's Sunday. Poor Maggy, she should have read the list of rules more carefully. Students at Girls Boarding School go to school any and every day of the week and that includes Sundays. HM Tom tells her to come down the stairs, for a caning. She refuses to do so. Impatiently, he grabs hold of her arm and pushes and pulls her down the stairs. She is told to stand on the bottom step and bend forward, with her hands on the fourth stair. He then canes her on top of her pristine white knickers. Apart from clenching her cheeks – not a sound does she make. ‘Take down your knickers,' he orders her. She is quick to obey. Now the cane is landing on her sore bare bottom. Striping her cheeks even more and he tells her to thank him for each cane stroke. As the final part of the caning, she has to count each stroke, as well as thanking him. At last the caning is over or is it? She is left standing with just her blouse on – her sore bare bottom is in full view and that is how she is to be dressed or undressed for the rest of the day. She promises to go to school next Sunday and forever more. Off she goes, knowing that she is going to be humiliated once she gets there.
